Art + Life: Maaza Mengiste

Join us for an evening with Maaza Mengiste as part of Columbia Univesity’s Art + Life series, a program of intimate conversations with poets and writers organized by Undergraduate Creative Writing. Recent guests include Ladan Osman, Hernan Diaz, Phillip B. Williams, Morgan Parker, Rita Bullwinkel, Katie Kitamura, Olga Ravn, Eileen Myles, and many others. Art + Life provides an opportunity for students to ask the invited reader questions and to engage in roundtable discussions with the artist.

Mengiste will be in conversation with writer and translator Lars Horn.

Maaza Mengiste is a novelist and essayist. She is the author of the novel, The Shadow King, which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize, and was an LA Times Book Prize Fiction finalist. Her debut novel, Beneath the Lion’s Gaze, was selected by the Guardian as one of the 10 best contemporary African books. Her story, “Dust, Ash, Flight,” was awarded an Edgar Award for Best Short Story. She is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, an American Academy in Berlin Prize, an American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Literature, a DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Fellowship, a Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers Fellowship, the Premio von Rezzori, a Fulbright Fellowship, and a Creative Capital Award among others. Her work can be found in numerous magazines and journals such as The New Yorker, The New York Review of Books, Granta, Esquire, and Rolling Stone.
